From dull, persistent discomfort to sharp, stabbing pain, when you have a toothache, you know it. While you may do your best to ignore it for the first few days in hopes that it will go away, the best course of action is to schedule an appointment with your emergency dentist. While that often means you’ll be seen the very same day, it’s not uncommon to have to wait a few hours or days until your visit. Here’s how to manage your discomfort in the meantime.
#1. Rinse with Salt and Warm Water
Salt and water. These two household staples may seem ordinary, but they form an infection-fighting concoction when mixed together. All you have to do is dissolve some salt in warm water and swish the solution around in your mouth (do not swallow it). This will kill harmful bacteria, alleviate swelling, and prevent infection.
#2. Use a Cold Compress
A cold compress can do wonders for a toothache. Placing it against the outside of your cheek for 10 minutes at a time can reduce puffiness and provide a temporary numbing sensation. If you don’t have a cold compress, you can use a towel-wrapped icepack or bag of frozen peas!
#3. Bite Down on a Peppermint Tea Bag
Peppermint is a much-loved flavor, especially around the holidays. But did you know that pure peppermint tea can also soothe your toothache? To use this method, let the tea bag cool before placing it against the problematic tooth. The slightly warm sensation mixed with the health benefits of peppermint will soothe your sensitive gums.
#4. Gently Chew on a Clove of Garlic
Garlic is well known for its pungent flavor and ability to fend off vampires, but it also has natural antibacterial properties! As a result, it can act as a natural pain reliever. To enjoy its benefits, you can gently chew on a fresh garlic clove or mash it up into a paste and apply it to the tooth.
#5. Brush with the Right Tools
When your tooth and the surrounding tissue are inflamed, the last thing you want to do is aggravate the area further. So, make sure to clean your teeth with the right tools, like a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. It can make all the difference when dealing with a toothache!
Dealing with a toothache can be downright debilitating. Fortunately, with the above remedies, you can alleviate your discomfort until you see your dentist!
